How to Care for Handmade Ceramics: 5 Tips to Make Them Last for Generations
Partilhar
Every piece of handmade ceramic carries a story — that of the clay, the time, and the hands that shaped it. But for that story to last decades, there are a few care tips worth knowing.
Why handmade ceramics deserve special care
Unlike industrial production, handmade ceramics do not undergo uniform glazing processes. Each vase, candlestick, or tray has natural variations — this is what makes them unique, but also more sensitive to thermal shocks and impacts.
The good news: with simple care, these pieces last for generations.
1. Daily cleaning
Use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, hard brushes, or aggressive chemical products — they can scratch the glaze or wear down matte finishes.
For more persistent dirt, mix a drop of neutral soap in warm water. Always dry with a cotton cloth.
2. Care for vases and plants
If you use ceramic pots for plants, consider:
- Using a saucer underneath to avoid marks on furniture
- Checking drainage — water accumulation can crack the glaze in the long run
- During harsh winters, bring outdoor pots indoors — frost can crack the clay
3. Candlesticks and candles
Ceramic candlesticks withstand heat well, but avoid:
- Lighting candles that exceed the capacity of the candlestick
- Moving the piece with still liquid wax
- Thermal shocks (e.g., placing a hot piece on a cold surface)
After the candle goes out, wait for the wax to cool completely before cleaning with a dry cloth.
4. Stains and wax
To remove melted wax: let it solidify, then remove with a card or plastic ruler. Never use a metal scraper.
For dark stains on light ceramics: baking soda with a little water, gently rubbed with a soft cloth.
5. Storage
If you need to store pieces: wrap each one individually in soft paper or fabric. Never stack without protection — friction scratches the surface and cracks can appear.
Small imperfections are part of the story
Small variations in color, brush marks, or lines in the glaze are not defects — they are the artisan's signature. In cultures like the Japanese, this philosophy is called wabi-sabi: beauty lies precisely in imperfection and time.
At NIXOFY, we work with small European producers who value this unique character. Every piece that arrives at your home carries the mark of its maker — and deserves the same care.
